This photograph, captured during the Napa Car Show, isn’t just about documenting beautiful vehicles; it’s about isolating and celebrating the sculptural beauty, vibrant color, and powerful shine of American automotive history.
In many ways, classic car shows are a photographer’s dream, but they present a challenge: how do you focus the viewer’s eye when surrounded by so much visual noise?
Isolating the Icons
To create a striking and dynamic composition, I made a conscious choice to pull the focus squarely onto the cars themselves. By desaturating the background and surrounding elements—the street, the distant buildings, the people—the photograph creates a sense of stepping back in time. The environment fades into a monochromatic memory, while the subject cars explode with life.
The bold red of the hot rod and the smooth tan of the lead fender become the focal points, emphasizing the chrome wheels, polished metal, and deep paint finishes. This technique isn’t just a stylistic choice; it’s a way to honor the meticulous restoration and effort that goes into these machines.
Creating Depth and Drama
The composition was carefully chosen to give the scene a powerful sense of depth and energy. By shooting from a low angle and placing the front car’s fender directly in the foreground, I used the car itself as a massive, sweeping frame. This technique forces the viewer’s eye down the line of vehicles, creating a dynamic progression from the immediate, smooth surface of the first car all the way back to the crowd watching in the distance.
The result is a photograph that is both nostalgic and modern.
