Reflections on a Still Morning at Pena Adobe Lagoon
The stillness of a new day holds a unique kind of beauty, and nowhere is that more apparent than at Pena Adobe Lagoon in the early morning. This photograph, captured on my Nikon D610 with a 50mm lens, is a quiet tribute to that tranquil moment just after dawn.
I wanted to capture the mirror-like surface of the lagoon, and using a shutter speed of 1 second at F5.6 allowed me to smooth out any movement and really emphasize the perfect reflection of the surrounding trees and sky. The 16×9 crop format is a favorite of mine—it gives the image a cinematic, panoramic feel that draws the eye across the scene, from the textured ground to the soft light in the distance.
While I often wonder how this particular crop will translate to a physical canvas, the digital image itself holds a special kind of peace. It’s a reminder of those peaceful mornings when the world is just waking up, and the only sound is the gentle lapping of water. It’s an invitation to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the simple, fleeting beauty of a new day.
