A Moment of Stillness on the Sacramento River
Sometimes, the best moments are found after the main event is over. My friend and I had just wrapped up a fishing trip on the Sacramento River, with no luck to show for it. But as we were packing up, I grabbed my camera and set up the tripod. This is the shot that followed, and it has since become one of my favorites.
What really makes this image for me is the dramatic presence of the Rio Vista Bridge. Officially known as the Helen Madere Memorial Bridge, its formidable steel structure dominates the frame. I find myself drawn to the detail of its design, from the vertical-lift towers to the series of Warren through trusses that give it such a strong, geometric silhouette against the sky. The sheer scale of the bridge—at 2,890 feet long and with the second longest lift span in the state—is awe-inspiring.
This photo is more than just a picture of a bridge; it’s a quiet testament to a day spent by the river, a moment of peaceful contemplation after an unsuccessful fishing trip. It’s a reminder that even when things don’t go as planned, there’s always an opportunity to find beauty in the unexpected.
