A Symphony of Color in the Monarch Grove
Some photographs are more about feeling than perfect clarity. This image, taken at the famous Monarch Grove off Highway 1 in Pismo, is a perfect example. While it may not be as sharp as I’d like, its strength lies in the way it captures a moment of pure, vibrant color.
I used a telephoto lens to get close to the stunning cluster of Monarch butterflies, and what immediately drew my eye was the incredible play of complementary colors. The warm orange of the butterflies stands out beautifully against the cool blue of the sky and the surrounding foliage. This natural color harmony is what makes the photo so captivating.
The slight softness of the image almost adds to its charm, giving it a painterly, impressionistic feel. It’s a reminder that a technically “perfect” photo isn’t always the most artistic or emotionally resonant. This one captures the magical essence of the scene—a living mosaic of orange and blue—and that’s all that matters.
